Nikolai Mikhailovich Amosov is a world-famous doctor, known for his heart operations and unique methods of life extension. On the very first day of the Great Patriotic War, he volunteered for the army and was appointed as a surgeon in a field hospital. In incredibly difficult conditions, doctors rescued the wounded in the battles near Moscow and Stalingrad, in Ukraine, Hungary, Germany, and then were sent to the Far East and participated in the war with Japan. In his book, N. M. Amosov shows the war as it was seen through the eyes of doctors. Suffering, courage, dirt and blood; the tragic and sometimes comic sides of the war are presented inextricably, as they were in reality. The memoirs are full of deep reflections on the time of Stalin, on the essence of Stalinism, on the Soviet system as a whole, on its transformation up to a complete collapse in the course of “perestroika”.
