The famous Russian traveler, geographer, ethnographer, writer, explorer of the Far East, full member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, Vladimir Klavdievich Arseniev (1872-1930) devoted his entire life to Siberia. Arseniev gave a description of the relief of Primorye and for the first time examined in detail the mountain system of the Sikhote-Alin; found the unknown sources of the largest rivers of the region and received the first information about their depths, flow regimes; studied animals, birds, fish and plants of Primorye; proved that the Nanai, Udege, Orochi are the descendants of the ancient and original population of the Far East and Siberia; recorded oral stories about the life and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. The result of his expeditions were works rich in content, written in a brilliant literary language, as well as fiction books “On the Ussuri Territory”, “Dersu Uzala” (withstood many editions and were translated into more than 30 languages).
Dersu Uzala, directed by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, won an Oscar.
