Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (1818–1883), in his novel Fathers and Sons (1862), shows the formation of social forces in Russia on the eve of the reform of 1861, a split into two camps: liberal nobles and democrats-raznochintsy. The writer was the first in Russian literature to discover the type of "nihilist" - the denier of everyone and everything Evgeny Bazarov. After the release of the novel, this concept became firmly established in cultural use and became the designation of a whole social phenomenon. The protagonist of the novel, nihilist student Yevgeny Bazarov, denies all values and traditions accepted in society, puts himself in opposition to all people. And only love for Anna Odintsova makes the hero give up his principles and take a fresh look at life. Turgenev himself was very passionate about his hero. In one of his letters to A. Fet, he wrote: "If the reader does not fall in love with Bazarov with all his rudeness, heartlessness, ruthless dryness and harshness ... - I am to blame and did not achieve my goal."
