Luc Boltansky and Arnaud Esker recreate the transformation of capitalism in Western Europe since the last quarter of the XNUMXth century, marked by deindustrialization and increased resource exploitation. The scope of this transformation is revealed only when the convergence of areas that are often considered separately: the arts, especially the plastic arts, culture, the antiques trade, the creation of funds and museums, the luxury industry and tourism. All of them are based on the exploitation of the past. Boltanski and Esker call this type of economy the enrichment economy. Such an economy is based not so much on the production of new things, but on the extraction of profit from the trade in things that are mainly intended for the rich and which form a source of enrichment for the rich who trade in these things.
