The book includes two immortal novels by Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov, one of the classics of Russian literature. An Ordinary History (1847) is his debut novel. It unfolds an eternal story about the collapse of illusions. A romantic young man comes from the provinces to the capital, full of hope, dreaming of the glory of a writer, of friendship and bright love. In St. Petersburg, he enters "under the wing" of his uncle, a man with great life experience, who is skeptical about lofty dreams and aspirations. The conflict of two generations, two characters, two worldviews in the "Ordinary Story" is shown with Goncharov's subtle humor and penetrating lyricism. The novel "Oblomov" (1859) is the pinnacle of I. A. Goncharov's work. The writer showed an amazing and paradoxical type of Russian man, making his name a household name. The novel received a mixed response from critics. N. A. Dobrolyubov saw in Oblomov a symbol of the inertia of Russia and a sign of the times. And, for example, A.V. Druzhinin wrote: “He is dear to us as an independent and pure nature, completely independent of that scholastic-moral shabbiness that stains the vast majority of people with himself ...” Some interpreted the novel as a satirical work, others noted in it and lyrical beginning, and subtle psychologism. This original and one of a kind book is still controversial. “Each of the characters created by Goncharov is an ideal generalization of human nature,” noted D. S. Merezhkovsky. Goncharov's novels are excellent examples of Russian prose of the mid-XNUMXth century, which have not lost their relevance for modern readers.
