Walter Forstmann (1883-1973) - the second most successful among the German submariners of the First World War. Under his command, the submarine U-39 managed to sink, damage and capture more than one and a half hundred merchant ships with a total tonnage of over 17 gross tons in 1915 military campaigns in 1917-400000. Forstmann talks about his raids in the Mediterranean in his memoirs, first translated into Russian and presented in this book. The publication is supplemented by the memoirs of an anonymous German submariner about the combat operations of a submarine under the fictitious number U-195 in the Arctic Ocean. In addition, the collection includes an essay "Operations of German submarines in polar latitudes during the First World War", written by N. Timoshenko.
