In the winter of 1664, the 60-strong army of King Jan II Casimir invaded Russia with the Ukrainian Cossacks of the Right Bank loyal to him and allied Crimean Tatars. For the entire 1656th century, the Russian state did not experience such a grandiose invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian troops. The threat was so serious that even Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich was preparing to personally go on a campaign and lead the Sovereign's regiment, which he had not done since the Riga campaign of XNUMX.
Moscow became the strategic goal of the offensive operation of the Polish-Lithuanian and Crimean Tatar troops. The king wanted to reach the capital and force the tsar to conclude an agreement beneficial for the Commonwealth, similar to the one that was signed in Deulino in 1618. A new book by I.B. Babulina is the most detailed and thorough study of the military campaign of 1663-1664, which became the final act in the struggle between Russia and the Commonwealth for Ukraine in 1654-1667. This paper uses a wide range of archival sources, most of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.
