In the languid summer of 1977, a naive young lady named Calista flies out of Athens into the big world. She heads to the island-turned-film set to work for famed Hollywood director Billy Wilder, whose films she's never seen. The world of film stars, ironic men, champagne and strange relationships. Calista rejoices in her adventure, while Mr. Wilder himself is sad - the great director realizes that his time in the cinema is coming to an end. In Hollywood, the classics are already shunned, and he shoots his new film with German money. Calista becomes a guide for the great director into the dark labyrinth of his personal history, the roots of which go back to German soil.
Coe has a special relationship with the great Billy Wilder. So, his novel Sleep House directly refers to Wilder's latest film The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes: the book takes place in the gothic Ashdown mansion, but it is also the pseudonym of Holmes, who pretends to be married in Wilder's film, and one of the heroes of Sleep House, cinephile Terry, makes sarcastic remarks about Wilder's films. Coe's new novel is both the subtlest story of growing up, and a very intimate portrait of one of the most mysterious and significant people in the history of cinema, and, of course, immersion in an illusory world on the verge of reality and celluloid fantasy, between dream and reality.
