July 1941. A pair of four-engine TB-3 bombers approached the coast of Romania and freed themselves from four I-16 fighters suspended under huge wings. After an accurate bombing attack on Constanta, despite the presence of Messerschmitts in the sky, the entire four left at high speed. In August 41, the same dive-bombers destroyed the crossings across the Dnieper without loss, significantly delaying the offensive of the Wehrmacht.
One of the most original methods of combat use of fighters, developed by engineer V.S. Vakhmistrov, received the name "Airplane-Link", but in the history of aviation the nickname "Vakhmistrov's Circus" was firmly entrenched in it. From 1931 to 1940, several variants of flying aircraft carriers with various bombers and fighters were tested. The most famous was the Zveno-SPB - a combination of TB-3 and a pair of I-16s, as high-speed dive bombers (SPB). In 1941, these "links" made more than 30 sorties, which, in terms of their effectiveness, turned out to be among the most successful operations of the Red Army Air Force at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. In the new book by the leading historian of aviation, the reader will find comprehensive information about the development, testing and combat use of all modifications of Vakhmistrov's "Link", as well as unique information about the unrealized projects of Soviet aircraft carriers. The edition is illustrated with exclusive drawings and photographs.
