The topic we touched upon in this book is extremely rare not only in Russian, but also in foreign publications. A lot of published literature on the Civil War in Russia, memoirs and memoirs of eyewitnesses of those events. We decided to compile a martyrology of the participants in the 1st Kuban (“Ice”) campaign precisely because no one had previously dealt with this topic in particular and no research of this kind was published anywhere. We believe that human memory should raise from oblivion the names of all the heroes of the Civil War, without dividing them into red and white, without praising anyone and without condemning their deeds in the future. The white warriors managed to describe that time in more detail precisely because many of them were lucky enough to stay alive and emigrate abroad. There they were able, in a "calm" atmosphere, to recall the entire epic of the White Army, the departed comrades-in-arms and their fate. The Reds could not have had anything like this due to the fact that it was forbidden even to remember this campaign (from the beginning to the end of the campaign there was not a single moment that could be called “heroic” for the Red Army, especially considering the disparate number of fighters with both sides) and many participants in those battles were subsequently repressed. There is not a single, more or less detailed list of Red Army soldiers and commanders of the Red Army who opposed the campaign of the Volunteer Army. We hope that our book will help erase some of the "blank spots" in the history of the Civil War in Russia and thus remember the names of heroic sons and daughters. The book is intended for those who are interested in Russian history and those who can find relatives and friends in the lists of participants in the campaign.
