The events in Kronstadt in March 1921 are one of the dramatic episodes in Russian history with an aura of mystery and romance.
In Soviet times, it was officially considered that the "Kronstadt rebellion" was "a counter-revolutionary adventure prepared by the White Guards and imperialists." The truth about these events was hushed up, other interpretations were impossible. With the advent of the era of "glasnost", a stream of information fell upon the townsfolk, containing a large number of previously hushed up facts, and sometimes speculation. The prevailing view in journalism and public consciousness was that the uprising of 1921 was a people's protest against Bolshevik tyranny. In many publications, radio and television programs, the scale of repression against the rebels was significantly exaggerated, the facts were distorted, interspersed with legends and myths.
Based on archival documents, the proposed publication objectively shows the course of the uprising and its suppression, analyzes the reasons for its occurrence and defeat. The events are presented from the point of view of the two opposing sides without ideological clichés and predilections.
2nd edition, revised and enlarged.
