Alphonse Lamartine is a French poet, writer and politician. Lamartine's fame reached its apogee in 1847, when he published The History of the Girondins, and in fact the history of the French Revolution. "History" was published for the first time a few months before the start of the Revolution of 1848, during which Lamartine headed the Provisional Government of the Second Republic. The impression of the book was enormous, since it was written on the basis of rare documents to which Lamartine had access due to his political position, as well as his conversations with people who witnessed those events.
“I would like the future republic to be Girondin, not Jacobin” - these words of Lamartine directly indicate his attitude towards the participants in the revolution. No wonder many historians reproached him for the fact that the "History" is subjective, that he sympathizes with the Girondins and even Robespierre, in many ways idealizes them, while not hiding his hatred for the Jacobins. That is why fifteen years later, reprinting his work, Lamartine accompanied the text with an afterword in which he tried to explain himself to readers. And it's as interesting to read as the "History" itself.
