Karl Kautsky is a historian, economist, philosopher and publicist, editor of the fourth volume of Capital. Kautsky's philosophical views underwent a complex evolution - from Darwinism and positivism to Marxism (where he became one of the leading theoreticians) and further to the "theory of ultra-imperialism", which proclaimed the onset of a new phase of the peaceful development of capitalism and the elimination of its contradictions, which in the long term called into question the inevitability and expediency of proletarian revolutions. Kautsky's desire to revise the political doctrines of the Marxist wing was an expression of a rethinking by a significant part of European intellectuals of social democratic orientations, ways and methods of struggle for social justice and socialism, their rejection of pseudo-proletarian states, as well as coups initiated by professional revolutionaries. The fundamental work "History of Socialism" was written mainly by K. Kautsky, but some of the chapters included in the second part of the publication belong to his co-authors P. Lafargue, E. Bernstein and C. Hugo. The book examines the economic, social and ideological foundations of various egalitarian theories, their development in history and successive change. Associated with the development of Russian society and certain trends in its ideology, the publication has historical significance. For students of sociological, historical, philosophical, political science specialties of universities, as well as for readers interested in the history of world social thought.
