American historian James Heinzen specializes in the Soviet history of the Stalin era, paying a lot of attention to the shadow economy of the period. He devoted his book to the topic of corruption, in particular bribery, in the USSR during the period of late Stalinism. Using rather extensive archival material, the author explores the rise of corruption and the attempts of the state to fight it in the conditions of the post-war reconstruction of the country, reconstructs the customs and rituals associated with offering and receiving bribes, pays special attention to bribery in the courts and prosecutors, describes in detail some major cases, for example case of corruption in the highest judicial instances of a number of republics and regions of the USSR in 1947–1952. The book is intended for specialist historians and a wide range of readers interested in the history of the USSR in the XNUMXth century.
