The publication is dedicated to the history of the creation of the Russian Compound with the Church of St. Nicholas in the Italian city of Bari. This is one of the central works of the pre-revolutionary period of creativity of the outstanding Russian architect Alexei Viktorovich Shchusev (1873–1949). The design and construction of the courtyard took place under the auspices of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and Emperor Nicholas II, artists K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, A. E. Yakovlev, V. I. Shukhaev, V. A. Plotnikov and V. S. Shcherbakov. The book contains the architect's design graphics, artists' sketches, documentary evidence of construction participants and pre-revolutionary photography in the fullest possible volume. Most of these materials are published for the first time and provided by state museums, archives and private collections, among which the archive of Shchusev's heirs occupies a significant place.
