The Prince is the most significant and controversial work of the Renaissance Florentine statesman Niccolò Machiavelli. For many years this book has been associated with the politics of poison and dagger. After the publication of The Sovereign, the term "Machiavellianism" appeared, denoting cynicism, permissiveness, duplicity in politics. However, today many of the author's provisions are perceived not so unambiguously, having found their embodiment in the history of the twentieth century. In addition to The Sovereign, this edition publishes another famous work by Machiavelli, Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius, which supplements and clarifies many aspects of the author's main work. Both texts are presented in the most up-to-date translation and annotated.
