The new novel by American writer Anne Patchett resembles a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, which has grown to the scale of a family epic. The story of the main characters, Danny Conroy and his sister Maeve, covers the entire second half of the XNUMXth century, and their fates are fatally intertwined with the Dutch House, a mansion in eastern Pennsylvania that once belonged to the bankrupt Dutch tycoon Vanhubeik dynasty. The Dutch House itself is not inhabited by ghosts, but everyone who crosses its threshold becomes, in a sense, a ghost of the house - wherever he then goes, wherever he subsequently lives, he carries this image with him everywhere. Danny and Maeve have just that: an untimely deceased father, a mother long ago turned into a memory, a stepmother who seems to have come out of a nightmare, and an ominous family mansion. And also an adult life that still never begins: the curse of childhood, the seal of orphanhood, the inability to break the bonds once formed. "Dutch House" is a story about the victory of love over evil. A victory mixed with losses and largely unobvious, because in the end the reader will have to figure out for himself which side he is on and whether there was a villain here. And if there was, then who?
