The book by Kimberly Elam, a well-known designer and teacher from Florida, has gone through several reprints in the West and enjoys well-deserved popularity. It explores the basic properties of geometric structures, the principles of visual organization, which have a mathematical basis, and the main laws of proportioning, the knowledge of which is necessary to create both works of art and purely utilitarian design objects. “As a material for analysis, I chose works that have stood the test of time and deserve to be called design classics. And even though they were created in different years, even if their forms and purpose differ, there is a striking similarity in how competently they are planned and, thanks to geometry, are brought together into a single organized system. The purpose of my work is not to evaluate the aesthetic qualities of objects through geometric rules, but to reveal visual connections based on mathematics and natural patterns of growth and development of living beings. We will try to understand how a design is created and how visual consistency is born, showing its structure. I sincerely hope that artists and designers will learn something of value from this analysis.” (Kimberly Elam)
