An unusual self-guided drawing book in which the author, Kimon Nikolaidis, talks about a completely original, natural way to draw. His approach is different from that of most art teachers. He does not focus on geometric constructions that underlie any constructions of animate and inanimate nature, but rather on sensation - on contours, relies on gestures, the play of light and shadow, a sense of the mass of the depicted objects, their proportions, the interaction of objects in the depicted space. Over the course of 25 sections, the author seems to be sculpting his drawings from clay and showing how it should be done, what you should pay attention to. The book is also a plan for teaching fine arts. At the beginning of each section there is a lesson plan consisting of the exercises given in the corresponding section. Scheduled every day in the life of a novice artist, and for each day specific exercises are given, analyzed in detail by the author. The author proposes not only to look and sketch objects of the real world, but to try to feel their nature, mood, literally, to touch and touch them. And then transfer your feelings and understanding of the depicted objects to a piece of paper. Nikolaidis' tutorial starts with an introduction to basic things like outline and gesture. The author suggests thinking about the nature of objects, trying to remember them as a whole, teaches you to transfer your first superficial sensations to a sheet of drawing and redrawing contours, to look for lines. In the second chapter, we are talking about impulse and gesture as a life-giving force that determines the nature of objects. The author introduces the concept of a potential gesture, talks about the correct allocation of a gesture, its unity. Offers to capture a blitz pose, of course, explaining what it is. Talks about the gesture of objects. Further, the next section talks about the shape, weight and energy of objects, about their constituent parts. Based on these concepts, the next task is to draw a “stucco drawing” with various materials, while not paying attention to the exact contours, to fashion an object using light, shadow, and try to convey its mass. A useful exercise for developing artistic skills can be quick sketches, when the model only briefly appears on the podium, after which it is necessary to sketch it from memory. For moving poses, it is worth trying to convey movement with the help of the nature and arrangement of the strokes. Group poses must be conveyed using the concentration of volumes. The book contains a huge number of images that depict famous paintings by eminent masters who worked on the same principle that the author talks about. They can serve as inspiration for future artists, show what to strive for and what to start from on their way to natural drawing, or drawing based on the nature of the surrounding objects.
