At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the regular commander of the Red Army, Vladimir Gil-Rodionov, was surrounded, captured by the Germans and voluntarily agreed to cooperate with the enemy. He created an anti-Soviet organization - the Combat Union of Russian Nationalists and led the armed units, which received the name of the Russian National SS Brigade "Druzhina". SS curators tied Gil-Rodionov's subordinates with blood in numerous actions to exterminate the civilian population in the territory of occupied Poland and Belarus, used "druzhinas" in sabotage and reconnaissance work in the Soviet rear and in anti-partisan actions. In the summer of 1943, as a result of a special operation of partisans and Chekists, Gil-Rodionov was recruited. In August, a significant part of the Rodionovites attacked the Germans, reunited with the "people's avengers", becoming the First Anti-Fascist Partisan Brigade ... Based on a wide array of archival sources, including previously unpublished ones, the authors tell the story of V. Gil and his formation.
