In the 1830s, the remarkable Russian artist Fyodor Grigoryevich Solntsev, on behalf of the President of the Academy of Arts, made colorful watercolor sketches of the priceless treasures of the Armory, the Patriarchal Sacristy, the cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin, temples and monasteries of ancient Novgorod and other cities with incredible accuracy. In the process of creating drawings, the artist managed to make a number of remarkable discoveries that clarified the dating and attribution of a number of monuments. Many of the objects sketched by him have not survived to this day, and we can get an idea of them only thanks to the publication of Antiquities of the Russian State, which was published in 1848. The publication, carried out by order and at the personal expense of Emperor Nicholas I, consisted of 14 volumes - seven contained text, and seven were albums of chromolithographs.
