The collection of ascetic writings of the Fathers of the 1731th-1805th centuries, compiled by Saint Macarius, Metropolitan of Corinth (1749-1809) and edited by the Monk Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain (1782-1815), was first published in Greek in 1894. The Greek word "Philokalia" ("Philocalia") means: love for the beautiful, sublime, good, love for beauty, love of beauty. Beauty means spiritual, to which a Christian joins, following the instructions of the ascetic fathers, collected in this collection. The full title of the collection sounded like “The Philokalia of the Sacred Sober Men, collected from our holy and God-bearing fathers, in which, through an active and contemplative moral philosophy, the mind is purified, enlightened and improved.” The Greek “Philokalia” was translated into Slavonic by the Monk Paisius Velichkovsky, and later, St. Theophan the Recluse (in the world Georgy Vasilievich Govorov, 1905-XNUMX) did a great job of translating the collection into colloquial Russian. This edition was carried out according to the edition of XNUMX "by the dependent of the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Athos." This word translated its Greek name - Philokalia, which means: love for the beautiful, sublime, good. In the closest way, it contains the interpretation of the life hidden in the Lord Jesus Christ. True Christian life, hidden in our Lord Jesus Christ, begins, reveals itself and ascends to perfection, in its own measure for each, according to the good will of God the Father, by the action of the grace of the Holy Spirit inherent in Christians, under the guidance of Christ the Lord Himself, who promised to be with us all the days inseparably. .
