In The Diary of a Writer, which has no analogues in Russian and foreign journalism, Dostoevsky directly communicates with readers and, as it were, invites them to join the discussion of the deep topics to which all his work is devoted: man and God, good and evil, freedom and destiny of Russia.
In the notes of 1876, he pays special attention to the analysis of the world politics of that time and the spiritual illnesses of Russian society, which turned out to be largely prophetic. And the result of his reflections can be considered the story “The Gentle One”, first published in the November chapter, where the writer explores the relationship between a tyrant and a victim using the example of an ordinary family.
