The monograph discusses: the biology of coronaviruses, the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2, the reasons why this virus has acquired a pandemic distribution, and the mechanisms leading to the severe course of COVID-19. Particular attention is paid to such manifestations of COVID-19, little known to Russian doctors, as: the phenomena of antibody-dependent increase in infection and antigenic imprinting; autoimmune responses to the virus; pathogenic priming; specific toxicity of the virus spike protein (S-protein); vaccine-induced mimicry syndrome COVID-19; possible association of S-protein with prion diseases and neurodegeneration. The monograph fills the gaps in knowledge on the immunology of epidemic, infectious and post-vaccination processes, which, for reasons unknown to the author, are missing in Russian textbooks for medical universities. The monograph is intended for a wide range of readers. It will be especially useful for senior students of biological and medical faculties of universities, infectious disease doctors, epidemiologists and healthcare organizers.
