French Orthodox theologian Jean-Claude Larcher, well-known to the Russian reader, in his book “The Human Body in the Light of the Orthodox Faith” proposes to comprehend the problem of the human body, its features, content and purpose, based on Christian anthropology and asceticism based on Holy Scripture and the teachings of the Church Fathers. The human personality is an indissoluble unity of soul and body, endowed with all its spiritual qualities. While Western civilization increasingly reduces the role of the body to a tool for obtaining pleasure, the author considers it in the context of the Divine plan, starting from the creation of man in the image of God, continuing with his salvation and deification. At the end of his work, Jean-Claude Larcher recalls the final destiny of the body in resurrection and the eternal divine life. Jean-Claude Larcher was born in 1949 in the town of Badonvillers in northeastern France to a Catholic family and became an Orthodox Christian at the age of 23. The formation of J.-C. Larcher as a theologian took place under the influence of his spiritual father, Archimandrite Sergius (Shevich), and also thanks to communication with the Monk Justin (Popovich), Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov), the disciples of Elder Joseph the Hesychast - Elders Ephraim of Katunak and Haralampy, with Elders Ephraim of Philotheus, Joseph of Vatopedi and Saint Paisios of Athos. Jean-Claude Larcher is the author of 31 books translated into 18 foreign languages, over 150 articles and over 700 reviews. He is considered one of the leading modern Orthodox theologians and one of the rare authors who are able to combine in his works scientific rigor and a vivid perception of the inner life of the Church.
