The ancient world of the "Slavic kind" - from the Arctic Ocean to the southern lands on the shores of the Adriatic, from the North Sea in western Europe to the current Russian lands in the east of the continent ... What are these reflections of an "alternative" Slavophile historian or novelist who chose the genre of Russian "fantasy" ? No: Mavro Orbini, the author of this book, first published in 1601 in Italian, and the abbot of a Benedictine monastery, belonged to the culture of the West. But his work is a hymn to the greatness of the Slavs, solemn and pathetic, despite the fact that the author follows the millennial tradition of Western historiography, the testimonies of chroniclers, cruel wars and politicized science forgotten over the past centuries. In this very contradiction lies the mystery of a small and concise, but completely unusual book. Many of its primary sources are now unique or forgotten. In addition, the author, a Dalmatian humanist, a southern Slav, stubbornly defends the idea, unexpected for him, of the origin of the ancestors of the “Slavic clan” from the Hyperborean North, the European Nord ... There is an opinion that Orbini’s work was included by the Vatican in the “Index” of books prohibited for reading and publishing in Catholic countries; but some researchers deny this fact, although Orbini on almost every page refers to the work of "forbidden" historians of the Protestant orientation (in Western Christianity at that time this was the main reason for the prohibition of the book by Rome). The situation is actually even more unusual: Orbini's book was indeed included in one of the many "Indexes", but ... under a strange, albeit similar-sounding name! Why?! Truly a man of mystery ... The book in our edition is published in the translation of 1722, made by the outstanding Russian diplomat of the Petrine era, Serb Sava Vladislavich. The commentary article and page notes will help the reader to understand the historical research of the Dalmatian scholar, written in an unusual for our time, expressive and dynamic manner. Sensational and unusually large-scale, it does not refute, but, on the contrary, affirms medieval information about the ancestors of the Slavs, which finds unexpected analogies in the bold hypotheses and discoveries of modern scientists.
