Alfred Döblin's (1878–1957) groundbreaking novel Berlin Alexanderplatz was a huge success in Germany immediately after its publication in 1929. But Franz Biberkopf, whose story is told by the author, is by no means one of those who are willingly taken as the main characters. A simple wage worker, a lover of women, just released from prison with a vague desire to live honestly and without problems. And now he is free again, in Berlin. There is some whirlwind around him incomprehensible: communists, fascists, bandits, Jews, police ... Finding a job is difficult. Our hero looks at everything, adjusts, re-searches for a place in the sun. Among other things, he makes acquaintance with a certain Reinhold and takes part in one deal of a fruit merchant - and Franz's fate again takes a sharp turn ... The novel, cinematic in its essence, was filmed several times. The television epic directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1980) received worldwide recognition.
