After the Germans seized the lands where the Baltic Slavs had long lived, in the XII-XIII centuries. intensive Christianization began, and with it the Germanization of the local indigenous population. In Slavic Pomorye, this complex and lengthy process began with the emergence of monasteries, the formation of a stratum of personally dependent population, and was accompanied by the expropriation of lands in favor of monasteries, churches and major feudal lords, for which numerous forgeries were sometimes committed. The study, first published in 1911, covers a period of 150 years from the adoption of Christianity until the end of the reign of Barnim I (1278).
