The book is a collection of essays and articles on the spiritual meanings of literature. The author is not a writer, but an economist, that is, not a "literary professional." But the more unexpected and interesting are the opinions and assessments, which are sometimes diametrically opposed to the prevailing stereotypes contained in literature textbooks for secondary and higher schools. The author departs from the traditional idea that fiction, being a part of culture, has a positive effect on a person and society (with extremely rare exceptions). The book expresses the opposite thesis: fiction, even classics, more often corrupts a person and destroys society. Most of the evidence is based on examples of Russian literature of the 1905th and early 1907th centuries, which was strongly influenced by Western European literature (J. W. Goethe, J. G. Byron, O. Wilde, and others). The fatal role of this Russian-language literature in preparing the conditions for the revolution of 1917-XNUMX and the February and October revolutions of XNUMX is shown. There were also “positive exceptions” in Russian culture of the pre-revolutionary period. The author refers to these, first of all, the works of A. S. Pushkin, N. V. Gogol, F. M. Dostoevsky.
