All illustrations in the book are made by a talented draftsman and People's Artist of the Russian Federation Anatoly Mikhailovich Eliseev. Chukovsky is famous primarily as the author of poems familiar to us from childhood. Who has not heard, for example, his "Cockroach" or "Fly Tsokotukha"? Korney Ivanovich is less known to the general public as a brilliant historian of literature. Thoughtful reading of books was the main passion of his life. Nikolai Korneychukov spent his childhood in Odessa, his mother was a simple peasant woman. The young man, expelled from the gymnasium for "low birth", was irresistibly drawn to literature. He could, pacing the streets of Odessa, begin loudly and with great feeling to read stanzas from "Eugene Onegin" or Fet. Under the pseudonym of Korney Chukovsky, he began writing articles for the Odessa News newspaper. Soon the editors sent Chukovsky as a correspondent in London, because he spoke excellent English, which he learned on his own. There, in the reading room of the British Museum, the aspiring writer devoured volumes of Swift, Thackeray and dozens of other English-language writers. Returning to Russia, Chukovsky soon settled in the Finnish town of Kuokkala, where he took up translations and literary criticism, quickly collecting a huge library. From his pen came out brilliant essays on the work of Chekhov, Balmont, Blok, Kuprin. Chukovsky wrote a major monograph on the work of Nekrasov (in 1962 he was awarded the Lenin Prize for it). Korney Ivanovich began to study children's poems, having already gained fame as a talented writer. At the same time, he developed his own unique style, the “Korneev stanza”. Chukovsky read the poems of other poets brilliantly and was aware of all the poetic novelties of the country. Sometimes well-known children's poems obscure other literary works of Chukovsky, but this only speaks of the versatility of this amazing person. The cheerful illustrations made by the talented artist Anatoly Mikhailovich Eliseev give a special charm to the book. He began his career as an actor, at the age of fourteen he began acting in films. However, his true vocation was drawing; Eliseev felt this keenly. The craving for painting led him to the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, which he graduated in 1952. Then Eliseev was twenty-two years old. The young man came to grips with caricature and book illustrations, began to collaborate with the magazines Krokodil, Funny Pictures and Murzilka; on their pages, his merry, mischievous drawings were instantly recognizable. In 1966, Eliseev became an Honored Artist of the RSFSR, and in 2001 he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Russian Federation.
