Book by full member of the Russian Academy of Arts, candidate of historical sciences A.V. Kibovsky is devoted to one of the modern and most popular types of examination of works of Russian portraiture - the historical-subject attribution method. This method, scientifically substantiated by the author in 2000, is based on the analysis of artistic images using knowledge about the uniforms, awards and heraldry of the Russian Empire in conjunction with genealogical, biographical and historical data. Over a quarter of a century of practical work by A.V. Kibovsky managed to identify and return the lost names to many “portraits of unknowns” in museums and private collections. 500 of them are presented in this book. In addition, the publication contains an essay on the development of the historical-subject attribution method since the 1880s. to the present day, which tells about its difficult and sometimes tragic ups and downs in the XNUMXth century and about those scientists who laid the theoretical and practical foundations that ensured the scientific recognition of the method at the turn of our century. The publication is addressed to a wide range of readers and represents the largest reference book on military iconography to date. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that until recently all the presented portraits were listed as unknown or even signed with other people’s names. Many attributions are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The book will be of interest to both professionals - art critics, historians, museum specialists - and anyone interested in Russian painting and the history of pre-revolutionary Russia.
