The Enemy is an anti-militarist book by Italian writer David Cali and French illustrator Serge Blok. Tired of the endless war, a soldier sits in a trench and thinks about the "enemy" - about the one whom the commanders in their agitation portrayed as a real monster killing women and children. Written in the first person, the seemingly childishly simple text of Kali reveals the hero’s more and more independent thoughts, while Blok’s laconic but very expressive drawings accurately convey the feeling of emptiness, fear and loneliness that gripped the soldier. In the end, the soldier understands that the war must be stopped at all costs. To do this, he decides to penetrate the enemy trench, where he is waiting for something completely different from what he expected to see. The book "The Enemy" received an award from the French Ministry of Education, was translated into a dozen languages and adapted for theater in France and Belgium. In spirit, this book can be compared with Remarque's famous anti-militarist novel All Quiet on the Western Front.
