Iosif Vladimirovich Gessen - a politician, publisher, journalist, lawyer, a well-known person in the society of the early twentieth century, was distinguished by various interests - he was a member of the Central Committee of the Constitutional Democratic Party, a responsible employee of the Ministry of Justice, a deputy of the Second State Duma, the editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper "Rech", mouthpiece of the Cadets, and the liberal magazine "Pravo", went into exile in the North of Russia, served in the judiciary in the provinces. He communicated in a friendly manner with ministers, revolutionaries, major politicians, famous writers, artists, actors ... And in exile he prepared and published the multi-volume Archive of the Russian Revolution, preserving evidence and documents for posterity.
The turning points in Russian history were not just unfolding before his eyes, he was a participant in them. And when I.V. Gessen decided to write his memoirs, summing up his life, he had something to tell. But he could not appreciate the fiasco that his party suffered in 1917. However, an honest account of the past itself provides an answer to the question why the Cadets were "thrown from the ship of history."
