The collection includes nineteen short stories by the famous American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald from three cycles: "Crazies and Philosophers", "Tales of the Jazz Age" and "Ah, These Unbearable Youth". All texts are given in translations by S. Yu. Afonkin. At the end of the book are the dates the stories appeared in American magazines, the names of these magazines, as well as the American artists who made illustrations for the stories.
These drawings by twelve different masters in the book allow Fitzgerald's characters to be seen through the eyes of their contemporaries. The period of its history from the end of the First World War to the beginning of the Great Depression is called the Jazz Age by Americans. The term was coined by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. In his stories, which appeared in American magazines in the first quarter of the 1896th century, the atmosphere of that time was brilliantly conveyed. Fitzgerald mostly wrote about Americans who considered themselves "the cream of society". He himself secretly longed to belong to them. Francis was born in 1920 to a family of Irish immigrants. Relatives paid for his studies at Princeton University. Within its walls, the young man began to dream of literary glory, because he certainly had the makings of a writer. However, Francis did not become his own among the “golden youth”. Irish origins and low financial status interfered. Fitzgerald later recalled that it was at this time that "hostility towards the idler class" arose in him. Often the young people in his stories are such rich loafers. The prototype of many young heroines of the writer was the beautiful Zelda. She was the daughter of a judge and was considered one of the most eligible brides in Alabama. The girl's family was against her marriage to an Irishman who was unable to provide his future wife with a comfortable existence. In love, Fitzgerald decided that his only trump card could be a triumph in the literary field. He moved to New York, got a job in an advertising agency and started writing short stories. At first, things went poorly - the manuscripts were returned. The first success happened only in 20 after the publication of the novel This Side of Paradise. Francis's works began to be printed, and he married his Zelda. In a sense, Fitzgerald became one of the heroes of his novels. He bought a mansion in Manhattan and began to appear regularly with his wife at all the iconic Big Apple parties. Although, of course, he was not a loafer-bon vivant - only hard writing work allowed him to lead such a lifestyle. This life, seemingly so attractive on the outside, had its downside. The couple often quarreled, jealous Zelda threw up scandals to her husband, and he flooded them with alcohol. A trip to Europe helped to break out of the New York endless whirlwind. It was there, in Paris, that Fitzgerald completed The Great Gatsby, a novel that became a masterpiece of American literature of the Jazz Age. The atmosphere of that time is well conveyed by the drawings in this book. They are made by a galaxy of American artists who illustrated Fitzgerald's stories in the XNUMXs.
