The General Staff of the Wehrmacht Ground Forces was the most important command and control body. He developed the strategy and tactics of military operations; all issues of “leading troops” passed through him. The history of the Chiefs of the General Staff is the history of the war between Germany and the USSR of 1941-1945. Hitler, when choosing a new leader, sought to settle on a person who would not in any way remind him of his predecessor. Therefore, the generals who held the post of Chief of the General Staff were very different. Their fates also developed differently: of the five whose biographies are given in this book (Ludwig Beck, Franz Halder, Kurt Zeitzler, Heinz Guderian, Hans Krebs), two committed suicide, and three calmly survived the war and were never involved in responsibility and did not suffer any punishment. But no matter how different these generals were, they all had one goal, which they tried to realize to the best of their ability - to achieve the victory of German weapons, and above all in the East.
