Novels, stories, plays, stories and essays by the outstanding teacher and writer Anton Semenovich Makarenko (1888–1939) comprise several volumes. "Pedagogical Poem" is his most famous work. In it, in artistic form, the writer talks about his unique educational and pedagogical experience. The text of the “Pedagogical Poem” is printed according to the first, complete edition of 1934–1936. The book is decorated with illustrations by the Honored Artist of Russia Anatoly Grigorievich Slepkov.
The pedagogical achievements of A. S. Makarenko are impressive. In 1920, near Poltava, he headed a colony for juvenile delinquents and in a short time, from a motley troupe of street children, he was able to create a real commune - a united and motivated team to work. The vital impetus that Anton Semyonovich gave to his students allowed them to become successful people and achieve a high position in society. Faith in a person alone was clearly not enough for such success. In 1917, Makarenko graduated from the Poltava Teachers' Institute with a gold medal, but the educational and pedagogical approaches adopted in his time were clearly not suitable for working with children whom the troubles of revolutionary upheavals had turned into asocial creatures. It is no coincidence that the colony that ended up under the leadership of Makarenko was unofficially called a “colony for the defective.” Anton Semyonovich came up with his techniques and methods of education, as they say, “on the fly.” A few years later, he presented this unique educational experience in literary form in a book that Maxim Gorky called a pedagogical poem - a book about the remaking of the psyche. It is not surprising that the “Pedagogical Poem” has been translated into many languages of the world. Its text was subject to editorial changes over time. In this edition it is printed based on the first complete edition of 1934-1936. This unusual and unparalleled work has universal significance. It is still relevant today. Some consider Makarenko’s pedagogical gift to be so unique that attempts to convey it are doomed to failure. This is wrong. The main behest of Anton Semyonovich is that a person who strives to teach and educate others must first of all be a successful and knowledgeable specialist in some field. Without this, pedagogy turns into empty chatter. Read Makarenko’s book and you will understand this yourself. The drawings in the book were made by Honored Artist of Russia A. G. Slepkov. Anatoly Grigorievich studied at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. I. E. Repin, and then for many years he collaborated with the publishing houses “Khudozhestvennaya Literatura”, “Children’s Literature”, “Malysh” and others, completing for them hundreds of illustrations for the works of Tolstoy, Pushkin, Gogol, Chekhov, Sholokhov, Gaidar, Andersen and many other outstanding writers. Anatoly Grigorievich has the talent to accurately convey the images of literary heroes in his drawings. This is immediately noticeable in his illustrations. Many originals of his works ended up in private collections in museums. They are stored both in Russia and abroad: in England, Holland, Denmark, France, the USA, Japan and other countries of the world.
