Philosophy, art, democracy, language and even computers - many of our achievements originate in the Greek civilization. As you know, both the empire of Alexander the Great and the Roman Empire were essentially Greek. The Greeks were looked to for inspiration by Renaissance figures and philosophers of the European Enlightenment. Following a clear chronology, James Heneage paints the history of Greece briefly and in large strokes. The first part of the book is devoted to the period from antiquity itself to 1453 - this time the author calls "the rule of half the world." In 1453, Greece lost its independence and became part of the Ottoman Empire, so that the second part covers a time period of almost four hundred years, which the author calls the “longest sleep” of the nation. 1830, the year of complete awakening from this "sleep", was the date of the declaration and final recognition of the independence of the Kingdom of Greece. The third part describes the history of modern Greece until 1949 (the reign of Otto, George I, the revolution and the Civil War in Russia, the First and Second World Wars and the civil war in Greece). The fourth part covers events from 1949 to 2020. The result was a concise and informative chronicle of the historical path of the Greeks, more than three thousand years long.
