The historical novel by Valentin Pikul tells about the events of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 and is dedicated to the courage and bravery of Russian sailors who defended the Far Eastern borders of our country. The tragic events of that time are shown through the fate of officers who, despite the defeat in the war, brought glory to the Russian fleet and fulfilled their duty with honor.
The protagonist of the novel, a young officer, Sergei Panafidin, serves on the Bogatyr cruiser, plays the cello in his spare time, and studies Japanese. Just before the war, he is transferred to the Rurik, one of the three ships that will soon have to take an unequal battle with a whole squadron of Japanese armored cruisers. The cruiser Panafidina will be destroyed, and the brave sailor will face captivity and severe trials. Having escaped from captivity, the midshipman returns to his homeland ... but what awaits him there? ..
