The name of Anatoly Naumovich Rybakov (1911–1998), a classic of Russian literature, author of the epoch-making novels “Children of the Arbat” and “Heavy Sand,” is known throughout the world, his works have been translated into dozens of languages. However, wide fame came to Rybakov long before the publication of his main novels. And adventure books have gained the greatest popularity, a special place among which is occupied by stories about Misha Polyakov, primarily “The Dirk” and “The Bronze Bird.” The heroes of these works belong to the generation of brave, honest, straightforward “children of the revolution”, and the sharp turns of the plot reflect the Civil War, NEP and the irreconcilable class struggle. Along with the books of Kassil and Gaidar, Rybakov’s adventure stories formed the golden fund of Soviet literature for youth, and were also filmed many times with the participation of the author as a screenwriter.
