The book by Japanese anthropologist Kunio Yanagita is devoted to the study of the indigenous cultural dichotomy of the Japanese people - the dichotomy of Buddhism and shamanism. Working with the national mentality of Japan in the era of change, which created a host of all kinds of fortunetellers, soothsayers, magicians, etc., Yanagita tried to understand all this diversity of intermediaries between “normal people” and the subtle worlds, to separate true shamans from charlatans, and also to understand the essence, purpose and the origin of the phenomenon of shamanism and give a description of the palette of its local manifestations. The translation presented in the publication by N. A. Nevsky, a Soviet Japanese scholar who also considered shamanism an important key to understanding religious consciousness, is published for the first time based on materials from the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
