Elena Ilyina (1901-1964) is the pseudonym of Leah Yakovlevna Marshak, the sister of Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak. She wrote many stories, poems and fairy tales for young and middle-aged children, but her most famous work is the story “The Fourth Height”, which tells about Gula (Marionella) Koroleva, her childhood, youth and feat during the Great Patriotic War. As a child, she played several roles in films, and for one of them she received a ticket to Artek. She was interested in everything around, she took on any business with great eagerness: she learned to dive from a tower, sit on a horse without a saddle, correct deuces, cultivate character and be brave. But soon the war began, and she voluntarily went to the front, where she helped the wounded and pulled about a hundred soldiers out of the fire. Gulya died in 1942, when she was only twenty years old. The book "The Fourth Height" is a real monument to an ordinary Soviet schoolgirl who gave her life for her Motherland.
For middle school age.
